Why Conspiracy Theories Polarize and Radicalize People
Prof. Jan-Willem van Prooijen endowed professor of radicalization, extremism and conspiracy thinking
Conspiracy theories demonise other groups. In doing so, conspiracy theories make people feel good about their own group, while also providing a warning signal that other groups are trying to harm them. Through these processes, conspiracy theories increase the divide between groups and contribute to hostility – and occasionally even violence.
